Case Study: Versatile Patio Umbrellas

Mike from Waipu in Northland took the opportunity to imagine what could be done with his backyard after receiving the keys and transformed the yard into a functional landscaped space that can be used all year round.

When designing a backyard space it’s important to consider how you will use the space and ensure you include areas for your activities. Dining spaces, gardening spaces and barbecuing spaces. Mike these concepts and also added a spa pool into the mix. Creating a space that friends and family can enjoy.
"We've got a young family, boys that are married and starting their families. So, it's mainly family and friends. For me, it's really just keeping it simple and having good background music and just a good variety of snacks. Do a lot of cooking on the barbecue. "

Mike discovered there’s a fine balance between creating shade and still having enough sunlight to enjoy the outdoors. Another consideration when you’re looking at shade is how it will impact or impose on the space. "We needed to have a shaded area. We had a table and chair set that had a center pole umbrella and we just found that intrusive when we had people sitting around the table. "
"We wanted to get away from that permanent roofs or clear light roofs and all that sort of thing. We felt that they were too permanent and it didn't let the light in and that times that you wanted the light in and we looked at the louvre system but they were just cost prohibitive for good quality ones when we came across these umbrellas that just sort of ticked all the boxes."
